Back from the Dairy Capital of Australia

So where’s the dairy capital of Australia? It’s not Mooroopna, which, with a name like that, would make perfect sense to me. Strange as it may seem, Mooroopna is actually the fruit salad capital of Australia and it’s Shepparton, the sprawling regional centre just a bridge over the Goulburn River away that actually makes that claim. And here’s how they celebrate over that way – some of Shepparton’s Moooving Art exhibition, where we just had to stop and take a few pics. Check them out and you’ll understand why we couldn’t just drive on by…

Aren’t they fabulous? And I think in a country of the Big Pineapple, the Big Banana and the Big Lobster – just to name a few – I think it’s great that Shepparton went with something much more fun than a Big Cow. I just love the Shrek cow and the mer cow. I think they’re my favourites, although the psychadelic number is pretty cool too.  In fact, they’re all udderly gorgeous:-)

Does your town or somewhere you’ve visited recently have a natty claim to fame, immortalised in sculpture? Is it as clever and fun as Shepparton’s? I’d love to hear about it.

Hmm, Ohakune in the Central North Island of New Zealand has a giant carrot, and in the main street of Paeroa there’s a giant Lemon and Paeroa bottle (if you haven’t tried Lemon and Paeroa during a visit to NZ you really MUST!) Ooh, and near Waitomo there’s a cafe with this giant apple with a bite out of it on the side of the road. It’s actually a viewing platform across the valley. Darn, wish I taken pics of those during our travels. We tend to take for granted what’s familiar in our world. At least I do.

BTW, Trish, the MerCow is seriously scary. Would you like to brush up against something like that while swimming??? Ack!

LOL Yvonne. Yet another reason to stay OUT of the water. Fran, who grew up in England with stone beaches and cold summers.

A giant carrot? The mind boggles. Love the sound of the giant apple with viewing platform, Yvonne, we must have missed that on our travels. Along with Lemon and Paeroa – that’s a definite must try for next time. And yes, Yvonne, pics please:-))

Swimming with Mercows? Sounds like a fantasy title. Or maybe a nightmare, you reckon?

Just as well cows don’t have fishy tails, Fran! But it is gorgeous, nonetheless. I just love the imagination that’s gone into these things. I bet the sculptors couldn’t help but giggle while they were at work.
