A way to actively help

It was just beautiful walking in the hills this morning. I didn’t spot one koala, but there were plenty of birds, squawking sulfur crested cockatoos, white tailed black cockatoos and parrots by the score, taking advantage of an abandoned apple orchard. And the noise they made! It was almost too loud to think.

The forests burnt out two weeks ago in Victoria’s Black Saturday are silent now. Visitors report that there are no bird calls, no animals. Others say it’s like being on another planet.  I’ve seen the pictures, but I can only imagine how wrong that must feel.It will take years for the bush to regenerate, years for the birds and wildlife to return and eventually it will happen.

Meanwhile, for those of us who would like to do something concrete to help the (human) victims of Victoria’s tragedy, Romance Writers of Australia has put together an appeal for books – one of the last things people think of buying when they have lost so much, but something we all know can provide a few blessed hours of entertainment and even escape.  I’ve been busy sorting out books to send. You might have a few books you could spare too.

Here are the details.

We’ve all seen the devastation the recent Victorian bushfires have
wrought and have wondered how we can help. We know that for many
affected families, books will not be high on their list of necessities
for some time to come.

We also know how valuable books can be in providing time out when
reality gets tough.

With the aid of some wonderful volunteers, we’ve put together a
Romance Writers of Australia Bushfire Book Appeal.

What we need?
FICTION BOOKS! Romance books, children’s books, genre books, whatever
– either new or in sparkling condition.

Please send them to:
RWA Bushfire Book Appeal
c/- 89 Rennie St
Thornbury Vic 3071

When to send them?
Now! And any time over the next few months. The books will be boxed
and delivered to the appropriate neighbourhood centres/community
centres/libraries in batches as soon as practicable.
Feel free to pop a note inside, or if you’re an author, sign it.

With thanks

Kelly Hunter
On behalf of Romance Writers of Australia Inc.
