Romancing the Weekend

What a weekend! Adelaide was lucky enough to host the Romancing the Novel romance writing seminar featuring special guest speakers, Anna Campbell and Yvonne Lindsay, along with all our local writing talents. Here’s a pic of me with Anna and Yvonne after I’d collected them from the airport on Friday. After checking into the city hotel, we hit Rundle Mall in the city and did some stationery shopping (writers just love stationery!)

I have to say Adelaide really turned on perfect weather. The days were sunny and mild, around 21C with cool mornings and sundrenched afternoons. Perfect for some sight seeing, which we got to on Sunday, but first to the actual seminar!

We had more than 30 eager romance writer apprentices and some 8 published authors including our special guests and the fabulous SA talent of Elizabeth Rolls, Claire Baxter, Anne Oliver, Amy T Mathews, Christina Carlisle, and me:-)) so there was no way people were going to go home without learning something!

Here some of them are, hanging onto every word…

Yvonne and Anna put together an entire morning workshop called “Secrets of a Best-selling Romance”.  It was basically a boot camp for writers, covering everything from the difference between Single Title and Category to what kind of writer are you to goal, motivation, conflict to how to write a great premise to everything inbetween!

And because we wanted more, both Yvonne and Anna fronted up to individual sessions in the afternoon on How to Make your Characters Real and Deep Point of View.

By the end of the day everyone was buzzing. Not to mention exhausted! Dinner was held at the Eros Ouzeri just down the street – a fabulous Greek banquet with more courses than you could count and more conversation than any . A delicious and very loud way to end a brilliant day.

It was truly the best day with the best company and once again I discovered that I really love the company of other writers, especially other romance writers, because we all have such a brilliant time together.

Tomorrow I’ll post some pictures from Sunday, when I got to drive both Yvonne and Anna around this very special part of the world I call home, but right now it’s time for our SARomance Author meeting and a seminar debrief. Catch you later!

And so lucky with the weather, Yvonne! Very grey and gusty here today and we’re crossing fingers for some much needed rain. Wouldn’t be the same at all.

Ooh, last weekend we were trawling the shops in Hahndorf, I do believe…
